Nevada Outdoor School programs inspire exploration of the natural world, responsible stewardship of our habitat and dedication to community

Nevada Outdoor School (NOS) provides a wide range of educational programming across rural northern Nevada. During the school year, our AmeriCorps Naturalists visit more than 50 classrooms each month to deliver standards based, inquiry science lessons. Our exciting, hands-on approach increases student engagement and sparks interest in STEM learning and the outdoors. Students leave our programs knowledgeable about the natural world and empowered to be positive stewards of the environment.   NOS also provides a series of place based field trips for 1st—5th grade students, overnight outdoor excursions, and summer camps for pre-K—8th graders.

Additionally, you will find NOS educators at all sorts of community events, volunteer conservation projects, agricultural fairs and more.

NOS offers Tread Lightly! and Leave No Trace programs, awareness workshops and trainer courses.  Both are national nonprofit organizations with a mission to promote responsible outdoor recreation through education and stewardship. Outdoor Ethics programming challenges participants to shape their own land ethic and evaluate the consequences of their actions in the outdoors.  You will find NOS Outdoor Ethics included in classroom lessons, summer camps and at special events. Look for our Outdoor Ethics ‘Road Show’ at Reno Motor Sports Expo, Nevada Outdoor Experience, Get Outdoors Nevada Day, Reno and Tahoe Earth Days and other sites and events near you. Additionally, NOS promotes safe and responsible recreation through hands-on ATV Safety trainings for youth and adults.  NOS offers both ASI (ATV Safety Institute) and OASYREP (Oregon ATV Safety Youth Rider Endorsement Program) courses.

Our community outreach programs are all about engaging with our amazing communities and encouraging people to get outside! Check our upcoming events regularly to keep track of all our regularly scheduled community hikes.

Every August, NOS hosts the Buckaroo Dutch Oven Cook-Off! Friendly competitive cooking, public tasting, games, raffles, music and great friends make this annual fundraiser an event not to be missed!

Each year, AmeriCorps programs nationwide provide opportunities for more than 75,000 Americans to devote a period of time, ranging from 3 months to a full year, to community service. The NOS AmeriCorps program serves Nevada non-profits, schools, public agencies, and various community groups with over 40 members serving in communities like Winnemucca, Battle Mountain, Gerlach, Elko, Lovelock, Reno and Las Vegas. The services these members engage in range from providing environmental education, assisting senior citizens, tutoring disadvantaged youth, helping those in need with low income services like Medicaid and food stamps, family stability programs, to participating in outdoor stewardship projects. Members gain valuable professional, educational and life benefits and the experience has a lasting impact on the members and the communities they serve. Funding is received through a sub-grant provided by Nevada Volunteers of Reno and match from organizations which host members.
