Hot Springs Interpretive Kit
(Double Hot, Trego and Black Rock)
Too Hot to Handle

Information contained highlights the role each of these hot springs played for emigrants crossing the playa. Since all three hot springs are located along the same fault line, they provide an excellent opportunity for studying plate tectonics and hot springs formation. Activities include: Take My Temperature – This is an exercise for students who have the opportunity to travel to one or more of the hot springs. Students take the temperature at safe points of the hot springs and discuss what makes these springs hot and temperatures fluctuate. Theory of Plate Tectonics Lesson Plan – Students learn about the theories concerning the development of landforms and the causes of geological occurrences. Students use available theory information to construct a super continent with paper cutouts. Snickers Science – Students use a candy bar to learn the differences between normal, thrust and transform faults and that the Great Basin is dominated by normal faults.
