Emigrant Trails Interpretive Kit
3 ½ Million Footsteps: One Step at a Time
Information contained highlights the history of westward expansion, key players and collectively explores emigrant experience on the historical trails. Activities include: Emigrant Trails Board Game – Students enjoy playing a game, while simultaneously applying what they have learned from the Interpretive Kit. By landing on question spaces, students must answer questions correctly in order to regain play. Trail Diaries – A number of diaries are included from emigrants who traveled west. Students can be broken up into groups to learn about different individuals and their particular experience on different trails. Students can come back together as a classroom to discuss what each group has learned about their particular emigrant and how they would have handled similar situations. Genealogy – Information items are included to aid students in researching their own family trees to determine their heritage and if their ancestors were part of the westward movement. A Typical Lunch on the Trail! Lesson Plan – Students have the unique opportunity to simulate trail life by preparing and eating a typical meal that an emigrant would have prepared and eaten for months on the journey west.
